Job Description
About The Company
Capital One is building responsible, reliable AI systems to reimagine banking and improve how customers and associates interact with financial services. With years of experience applying machine learning to personalized, real-time customer experiences, the company combines technology infrastructure, machine learning expertise, and engineering talent to develop impactful AI products. The Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team works with partners across Capital One to advance AI science and engineering. It builds and deploys proprietary models and platforms that help teams deliver valuable, scalable AI capabilities to millions of customers.
About The Role
Capital One is seeking an experienced AI Engineer 5 to help shape foundational AI systems and production-grade generative AI capabilities. In this senior technical role, you will work with engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered products. You will help develop and operate systems spanning foundation model training, large language model inference, agentic and multi-agent workflows, similarity search, model evaluation, guardrails, experimentation, governance, and observability. You will also influence technical direction, improve the performance and efficiency of AI infrastructure, and help establish consistent engineering practices across teams.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field and at least six years of experience developing AI or machine learning algorithms or technologies; alternatively, a relevant master’s degree and at least four years of such experience. At least six years of programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java is required.
Preferred qualifications include experience deploying scalable, responsible AI on cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure; designing and supporting complex AI systems; and building agentic workflows. Relevant expertise may include LLM inference, vector databases, similarity search, guardrails, memory, model optimization, and integration of generative, retrieval-augmented, and rule-based components. Candidates should understand tradeoffs among accuracy, latency, throughput, hardware utilization, and cost, and be able to right-size models and infrastructure for workload requirements. Experience with responsible AI standards, including fairness, explainability, and human review, is valued. Strong communication skills, sound technical judgment, curiosity about AI research, and the ability to lead through ambiguous challenges are important.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, deploy, and support scalable AI software and services, including model training and inference components, agents, multi-agent orchestration, retrieval systems, evaluation tools, and safeguards. Integrate large language models, vector search, and domain-specific models into reliable production pipelines. Use technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Hugging Face, PyTorch, and vector databases to build and operate AI solutions.
Develop and apply optimization techniques that improve model and system performance, including scalability, GPU utilization, latency, throughput, and operating cost. Lead technical design reviews and contribute to engineering standards, governance, observability, and the long-term roadmap for foundational AI systems. Establish cost-performance reviews, assess system metrics, mentor senior technical colleagues, and collaborate across disciplines to deliver responsible products that meet business and customer needs.
Benefits
This position offers a full-time annual salary range of $229,900–$262,400 in McLean, Virginia, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, and $250,800–$286,200 in New York, New York; San Francisco, California; and San Jose, California. Pay for other locations varies, and the specific salary will be stated in the offer. The role may also be eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, including cash bonuses and/or long-term incentives. Capital One provides a comprehensive benefits program supporting health, financial security, and overall well-being. Eligibility varies by employment status and level. Capital One will consider sponsorship for qualified applicants who need employment authorization.
Equal Opportunity
Capital One is an equal opportunity employer committed to non-discrimination under applicable federal, state, and local laws, including protections for individuals with disabilities and veterans. The company maintains a drug-free workplace and considers qualified applicants with criminal histories in accordance with applicable laws. Reasonable accommodations are available for applicants who need them during the recruiting process.
