Job Description
About ai.io
ai.io is an award-winning sports technology company that helps organizations and athletes capture, understand and act on performance data. Our products include aiScout and aiLab, powered by 3DAT, our AI-driven biomechanics engine. We work across professional and amateur sport to make advanced analysis more accessible, scalable and useful.
About the role
We're building an AI platform that goes beyond measuring performance to understanding how athletes move, compete, and improve. We're developing athlete world models, multimodal foundation models, and AI agents that can learn from and reason across different sources of information. By connecting video, human movement, athlete performance, wearables, and organizational systems, we're bringing together data that has traditionally been fragmented to uncover patterns, understand relationships, and help coaches, athletes, and sports organizations make better decisions.
We are looking for an Applied AIML Engineering Co-op to help build AI-powered products that enable sports organizations to explore, compare and interpret athlete data. Working closely with the technical lead and colleagues across AIML, software engineering, product and sport science, you'll explore emerging approaches, develop practical solutions, validate them with real users, and help bring them into production.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys tackling challenging problems and building things that make a real impact. Depending on the project, you may work on model development and optimization, multimodal learning, computer vision, AI agents, data pipelines, cloud services, APIs, or analytical applications. You should be comfortable moving between AI-enabled product development, backend engineering, data work and rapid technical problem-solving.
Key responsibilities
• Explore, develop and evaluate ML models, including computer vision, multimodal learning, athlete world models and emerging architectures.
• Evaluate and optimize models and systems for accuracy, reliability and usefulness, and document assumptions, limitations and technical decisions.
• Build and improve cloud-based services, data workflows and product capabilities supporting.
• Develop prototypes and production-oriented tools that transform sports and performance data into useful comparisons, summaries and insights.
• Support ingestion, cleaning, transformation and alignment of data from multiple sources and formats.
• Create and maintain APIs, backend components, scripts and internal utilities that help the team move quickly.
• Work directly with product, engineering and sport-science colleagues to translate user needs into scoped technical solutions.
• Contribute across adjacent technical priorities when needed, including debugging, deployment support, automation and data analysis.
Required capabilities
• Working knowledge of AI/ML concepts and the judgment to choose a simple engineering solution when ML is not required.
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, or the ability to become productive quickly in a cloud environment.
• Familiarity with databases, data pipelines, APIs and common software-development practices.
• Strong Python skills and experience building software or data applications beyond coursework.
• Ability to work independently and communicate progress clearly
• Curiosity, versatility and comfort working in a fast-moving environment where priorities and technical approaches may evolve.
Helpful experience
• Building applications with large language models, retrieval, agents or related AI services.
• MLOps, model deployment, observability or production data infrastructure.
• Sports analytics, biomechanics, human-performance data or computer vision.
• Frontend development, data visualization or rapid product prototyping.
• A personal interest in sport, athlete development or applied performance technology.
Eligibility
Open to current students and recent graduates in computer science, software engineering, AIML, data science, electrical or computer engineering, or a related technical field. Candidates must be able to work from the San Francisco Bay Area for the six-month term.
Equal opportunity
ai.io is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and make employment decisions based on qualifications, merit and business need.
