Job Description

About the Company

Upstart is an AI-powered lending marketplace focused on reducing the cost and complexity of borrowing for Americans. The company partners with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through advanced artificial intelligence and data-driven lending technology.

Upstart operates as a digital-first organization, with employees working across more than 80 cities in the United States and Canada. The company supports flexible work arrangements while encouraging regular in-person collaboration through team meetings, planning sessions, and company events.

About the Role

Upstart is seeking a DevOps Engineer (L4) to join its Cloud Platform team within the Reliability organization. The team builds and operates shared cloud infrastructure that supports the company's product and machine learning workloads, including Kubernetes, AWS infrastructure, service mesh, identity, and developer tooling.

In this role, you will help evolve the cloud platform to support increasing scale and complexity. You will collaborate with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Delivery, Information Security (InfoSec), and Product and Machine Learning teams to improve platform reliability, security, scalability, developer experience, and cost efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and operate Kubernetes (EKS) clusters across production, staging, and ephemeral environments to maintain reliability and high availability.
  • Develop and improve AWS infrastructure and network architecture, including VPCs, subnets, IAM, and account structures, to support scalable workloads across multiple teams.
  • Build and maintain infrastructure-as-code and GitOps workflows using tools such as Terraform, AWS CDK, and ArgoCD.
  • Define and drive Service Level Objectives (SLOs), analyze incidents, and implement systemic improvements to platform reliability and performance.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation and help improve incident response processes, including leading incident response and post-incident reviews.
  • Partner with SRE, Delivery, InfoSec, and Product and ML teams to implement high-impact infrastructure changes and establish platform standards.
  • Improve developer experience by simplifying platform usage, reducing repetitive operational work, and enabling faster product and machine learning development.
  • Support cost-efficiency initiatives by optimizing resource utilization across Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience operating Kubernetes in production environments, including cluster networking, storage, and role-based access control (RBAC).
  • Proficiency in AWS infrastructure, including VPC design, networking, and IAM.
  • Demonstrated expertise in implementing infrastructure-as-code using tools such as Terraform or AWS CDK.
  • Experience implementing GitOps workflows using ArgoCD or similar tools.
  • Ability to influence technical decisions across teams and drive the adoption of platform standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of service mesh technologies such as Istio or Envoy.
  • Experience designing or operating multi-cluster Kubernetes architectures.
  • Experience with cloud networking at scale, including ingress and egress systems or edge platforms such as Cloudflare.
  • Knowledge of cloud security, identity, and compliance frameworks, including IAM, SOC 2, and CIS benchmarks.

Location and Work Arrangement

  • Remote position available in the United States and Canada, subject to hiring eligibility.
  • Upstart follows a digital-first work model and encourages in-person collaboration through regular team onsites. Most teams meet once or twice per quarter for two to four consecutive days, depending on the team and role.
  • For positions based in Canada, Upstart is currently unable to hire in Quebec.

United States — Remote: Anticipated base salary range of $142,000–$196,600 USD.
