Job Description

How will you make a difference to PMI?

PMI is seeking a Director, Strategic Product Marketing to lead product marketing strategy and go-to-market (GTM) execution across its global portfolio of certifications, learning products, memberships, and digital offerings.

This role connects product strategy, market insights, and commercialization to create clear positioning, compelling messaging, and integrated GTM plans that drive business results. The Director will ensure PMI's portfolio is presented as a connected ecosystem of solutions that support professionals, organizations, and the future of project management.

As both a strategic leader and operational partner, this individual will translate customer needs, market trends, competitive intelligence, and business priorities into cohesive product marketing strategies while driving alignment and execution across cross-functional teams.

This role is responsible for four highly connected areas of leadership:

• Product Marketing Strategy

• GTM Strategy and Readiness

• Market Education and Portfolio Storytelling

• Product Marketing Operations and Governance

The Director will collaborate extensively with Product Management, Certification Delivery, Content Marketing, Web, Sales Enablement, Regional Marketing, Community, Partnerships, Communications, Creative, Analytics, and Executive Leadership teams. Success requires the ability to align diverse stakeholders around a common strategy while balancing long-term portfolio goals with near-term business priorities.

This role does not replace the responsibilities of content marketing, campaign management, product management, web operations, or regional activation teams. Instead, it serves as the connective layer that aligns these functions around a common product marketing vision and GTM operating model.

The Director operates comfortably at multiple levels of the organization. They can facilitate executive discussions regarding portfolio strategy and investment priorities, provide direction to launch teams responsible for execution, and coach developing product marketing professionals to strengthen their capabilities and impact.

What You'll Bring to the Role:

Portfolio Positioning and Strategic Narrative

Develop and maintain a portfolio-level point of view across PMI's ecosystem of products, services, certifications, and professional experiences. Define how offerings relate to one another, where they complement each other, where overlap exists, and how the overall portfolio should be understood by practitioners, organizations, partners, and global markets.

Build and evolve a messaging architecture that creates consistency across audiences, channels, regions, and customer journeys. Ensure that product positioning reflects both current market realities and PMI's long-term strategic vision.

Create frameworks that help stakeholders understand portfolio relationships, customer pathways, and value creation opportunities. Establish a narrative that connects PMI's offerings to broader industry trends, workforce needs, and the future of the profession.

Portfolio GTM Prioritization and Positioning Governance

Own the operating model that determines how product marketing resources, GTM efforts, and readiness activities are prioritized across PMI's portfolio. Develop launch tiering frameworks and scalable processes that allow flagship initiatives to receive appropriate investment while ensuring smaller products and lifecycle initiatives receive the support they need.

Create governance structures that maintain consistency in positioning, messaging, and GTM execution. Establish standards and review processes that help teams align around common goals and quality expectations.

Ensure PMI's certifications, learning products, research, community offerings, thought leadership initiatives, and future innovations contribute to a unified market story that resonates across audiences and regions.

Product Marketing Strategy and GTM Architecture

Lead the strategic product marketing work that supports launches, campaigns, lifecycle programs, portfolio priorities, and business growth initiatives.

Translate market opportunities, customer needs, practitioner insights, competitive intelligence, and product strategy into compelling positioning, differentiated value propositions, audience segmentation strategies, messaging frameworks, launch plans, sales narratives, and commercialization strategies.

Develop integrated GTM plans that clearly define audience targets, business objectives, channel strategies, content requirements, enablement needs, operational dependencies, success metrics, and stakeholder accountabilities.

Serve as a strategic advisor to product and business leaders, helping guide decisions that influence market adoption, awareness, engagement, and revenue growth.

Team Leadership and Product Marketing Excellence

Lead, coach, and develop a team responsible for product marketing and GTM operations.

Create an environment that encourages strategic thinking, accountability, continuous learning, and operational excellence. Establish clear expectations, performance standards, and development opportunities that help team members grow their skills and careers.

Build scalable systems and tools that improve team effectiveness, including positioning frameworks, launch playbooks, readiness checklists, portfolio calendars, competitive intelligence programs, content briefs, stakeholder communication plans, and retrospective processes.

Champion best practices that improve consistency, efficiency, and execution quality across the organization.

Content Strategy for Product Positioning

Partner closely with content marketing leaders to ensure content investments support product strategy, audience education, market awareness, and commercialization goals.

Help define the audience challenges to address, the beliefs to shift, the proof points that matter, and the role each content asset should play throughout the customer journey.

Leverage research, practitioner insights, customer stories, thought leadership, industry trends, and community expertise to strengthen positioning and increase market relevance.

Ensure content strategies support both immediate GTM priorities and long-term market education objectives.

GTM Readiness and Commercialization Operations

Build and oversee the operating system that translates portfolio strategy into successful market execution.

Partner with stakeholders across Product, Certification Delivery, Sales Enablement, Web, Commerce, Content, Legal, Regional Marketing, and Delivery Partners to ensure launches are fully prepared for market success.

Drive visibility into key dependencies, milestones, risks, and readiness requirements. Establish proactive processes that identify challenges early and facilitate timely resolution.

Ensure that launch plans, product detail pages, customer-facing assets, enablement materials, operational requirements, and stakeholder communications are aligned and delivered on time.

Market Education and Evangelism

Help PMI strengthen its position as a trusted voice on the future of project management and the evolving needs of professionals and organizations worldwide.

Develop narratives that extend beyond individual products and contribute to broader industry conversations through thought leadership, events, media engagement, community participation, executive communications, and partner ecosystems.

Represent product marketing perspectives in strategic discussions and help elevate PMI's visibility, credibility, and influence across the market.

Competitive Intelligence and Market Insights

Develop a disciplined approach to gathering and interpreting market intelligence.

Collect insights from customers, partners, sales teams, regional stakeholders, research, communities, industry trends, and competitive offerings.

Transform these insights into actionable recommendations that influence positioning, packaging, roadmap discussions, launch strategies, and portfolio planning decisions.
