Job Description
About Analog Photonics
Analog Photonics is a Boston-based silicon photonics company developing high-performance photonic integrated circuits for LiDAR, free-space optical communications, data communications and defense systems. Our designs, including the world's best optical phased arrays, are built on a proprietary 300mm CMOS-foundry silicon photonics platform optimized for low cost, high reliability and high yield. Engineers here work hands-on across the full design, build and test cycle, and your work goes directly from concept to prototype to fielded system.
The role
We are hiring three electrical engineers for our LiDAR and free-space optical communications (FSOC) hardware team, at two levels. One Senior Electrical Engineer will own the mixed-signal boards that drive and read out our photonic chips, from architecture through production. Two Electrical Engineers, early in their careers, will support design and test alongside the senior engineer. Apply through this one posting and tell us which level you are applying for; we will consider you for the level that fits your experience.
Senior Electrical Engineer (1 opening): what you will do
- Architect and design mixed-signal PCBs: low-noise analog front ends, high-speed ADCs and DACs, laser and phase-shifter drivers, power, and FPGA and microcontroller sections.
- Own schematic capture and direct or perform layout for high-speed and low-noise designs, including stack-up, signal integrity and power integrity.
- Select components and make architecture trade-offs with the photonics, FPGA and firmware teams.
- Lead board bring-up, debug and characterization, and close the loop into the next revision.
- Manage board fabrication and assembly vendors and prepare designs for manufacturing and test.
- Mentor the electrical engineers on the team, review their work and set design practices.
Senior Electrical Engineer: required qualifications
- BS in Electrical Engineering with 8+ years, or MS with 5+ years, designing mixed-signal boards that shipped.
- Schematic capture and layout of analog, mixed-signal and high-speed designs (Altium preferred).
- Low-noise circuit design and test, and experience with high-speed data converters.
- Designing boards around FPGAs, especially Xilinx devices.
- Strong hands-on debugging with oscilloscopes, spectrum and network analyzers.
- SPICE and MATLAB or Python for simulation and analysis.
Electrical Engineer (2 openings): what you will do
- Design and simulate sub-circuits and small boards: analog front ends, drivers, power and test fixtures.
- Assist with schematic capture, layout review and bills of materials.
- Bring up, debug and rework boards at the bench, including fine-pitch soldering.
- Write Python or MATLAB scripts to automate measurements and analyze data.
- Characterize noise, bandwidth, linearity and power, and document results.
- Support integration of boards with photonic chips, FPGAs and firmware in the lab.
Electrical Engineer: required qualifications
- BS or MS in Electrical Engineering.
- 0 to 4 years of experience; strong internships, co-ops or project work count.
- Solid analog and digital circuit fundamentals.
- Hands-on bench skills with oscilloscopes, signal generators, power supplies and multimeters.
- Experience with a schematic and layout tool such as Altium or KiCad.
- Python or MATLAB for test automation and data analysis.
Preferred qualifications, both levels
- Electro-optic systems experience, especially LiDAR, optical communications or laser drivers and TIAs.
- High-speed interfaces such as JESD204, Ethernet, SGMII or USB.
- Exposure to FPGAs, microcontrollers, and I2C, SPI and UART interfaces.
- Control systems and digital signal processing.
- Design for EMI/EMC, thermal and automotive or aerospace environments.
Details
This position is full-time and on-site in Boston, Massachusetts. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. Pay range: $95,000 to $205,000 per year across both levels, depending on experience: $160,000 to $205,000 for the Senior Electrical Engineer and $95,000 to $130,000 for the Electrical Engineer positions. Analog Photonics is an equal opportunity employer.
The government’s broadest measure of unemployment, which also counts people working part-time who want full-time, was 7.6% in September, against 8.1% a year before. See it over the years →
