Engineering Manager, AI Systems

San Francisco (Hybrid) | $220K-$250K base

About the Company

We are conducting a confidential search for a senior engineering leader to join the AI division of an established healthcare technology company with about 300 employees and a long track record serving healthcare organizations.

The AI division was formed after the acquisition of a YC-backed healthcare AI company. It runs with the autonomy and pace of a startup while drawing on the resources, customer relationships, and distribution of an established healthcare business.

The team builds production AI applications across complex healthcare workflows, including prior authorization, appeals, correspondence, and other workflow automation. The organization has a direct path to real-world deployment and works closely with customers to develop and improve its products.

The AI division is entering a period of significant growth and is looking for an engineering leader to shape its technical direction, build the engineering organization, and scale its production systems.

The Role

The Engineering Manager (VP-level internally) reports directly to the Chief AI Officer / GM of the AI Systems business and owns engineering across the organization.

The team is small and scaling quickly. You will inherit an experienced engineering foundation and have the opportunity to build out the organization, set engineering practices, and shape the technical architecture as the product portfolio expands.

The engineering organization focuses on:

• Prior authorization automation
• Appeals
• Healthcare correspondence
• AI-powered workflow automation
• Infrastructure and production systems

This role is intentionally hands-on for a senior engineering leader. You’ll stay close to the technology through architecture, technical decision-making, and regular production code review while building and managing the team.

What We’re Looking For

• 8-15 years of software engineering experience
• 2-5 years leading engineering teams, ideally organizations of about 5-20 engineers
• Experience building and hiring an engineering team from an early stage
• Strong track record owning production software and technical systems
• Comfortable staying hands-on and regularly reviewing production code
• Experience in an AI-native, vertical SaaS, or enterprise software environment
• Good technical judgment and the ability to balance product velocity with long-term architecture
• Clear communication and the ability to work across engineering, product, AI, and business teams

Nice to Have

• Healthcare, RCM, or healthcare technology experience
• Experience building products for complex enterprise workflows
• Experience modernizing or integrating with legacy enterprise systems
• Experience managing engineering managers
• Deep TypeScript experience
• Python experience
• Familiarity with .NET and SQL Server
