About The Role

Greymatter Innovationz is seeking a Lead Backend Developer for a full-time, permanent position based in Chicago, Illinois. This role is suited to an experienced software developer with at least six years of relevant experience and a strong background in Java, Spring Boot, microservices, and RESTful APIs, along with working knowledge of React and modern web technologies.

As a technical anchor for the development team, you will help shape application architecture and guide engineering practices while remaining actively involved in hands-on development. You will collaborate with team members to deliver enterprise-grade applications that are scalable, secure, maintainable, and responsive to business and user needs. This opportunity combines technical leadership with direct contribution to critical application components.

Qualifications

Candidates should have at least six years of professional software development experience and demonstrated proficiency in Java and Spring Boot. Experience designing and developing microservices and RESTful APIs is essential. Applicants should also have practical experience with React, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3, including the ability to contribute to responsive and intuitive user interfaces.

The ideal candidate can evaluate technical requirements, make sound design decisions, and communicate solutions clearly to both technical and nontechnical colleagues. A strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, coding standards, application security, and performance considerations is important. Candidates should be comfortable reviewing code, sharing constructive feedback, and supporting the development of junior and mid-level engineers. A collaborative mindset, attention to quality, and commitment to continuous improvement are expected.

Responsibilities

Lead the design, development, and implementation of enterprise-grade applications using Java and React technologies. Design, build, and maintain scalable microservices and RESTful APIs using Java and Spring Boot, contributing directly to essential components and resolving technical challenges throughout the development lifecycle.

Provide technical direction to the development team by advising on architecture, design patterns, coding standards, and engineering best practices. Remain hands-on in coding, balancing leadership responsibilities with meaningful individual contribution. Develop responsive, user-friendly interfaces using React, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3, working to connect front-end experiences with reliable backend services.

Conduct code reviews and help ensure that application code meets established standards for quality, security, performance, and maintainability. Identify opportunities to improve implementation approaches and share recommendations with the team. Mentor junior and mid-level developers, provide practical technical guidance, and support their continued professional growth. Collaborate with colleagues to deliver dependable solutions aligned with project requirements and organizational goals.
