Job Description
Physical Security Solutions Architect
Department: Solutions Engineering & Integration
Reports To: SVP of Operations
Employment Type: Full-Time · Exempt
Location: Remote / Field-Based — Phoenix, AZ preferred (customer travel up to 50%)
01 | About MissionRT
MissionRT (Mission Ready Technologies) is a public safety and govtech solutions provider serving state and local government, K-12 and higher education, healthcare, and federal customers. We partner with industry leaders — including Verkada, Evolv Technology, and ZeroEyes — to design and deliver layered security that protects people where they live, learn, and work.
At MissionRT, we don't just install technology — we architect solutions that save lives.
02 | The Role
MissionRT is hiring a Physical Security Solutions Architect to own the design of layered physical security for our customers — from the property line to the front door to the moment a threat is detected. You will sit across the table from superintendents, police chiefs, facility directors, and IT leaders; understand how their sites actually operate; and turn that into an architecture that works on day one and scales across a district, county, or campus portfolio.
Your designs will integrate three layers into a single response workflow:
► Perimeter & Entry Control — site perimeter, vehicle and pedestrian approaches, license plate recognition, door and vestibule access control, visitor management, intercoms, and touchless weapons screening at entrances (Verkada Access Control, Guest and Intercom; Evolv Express).
► Video Surveillance — cloud-managed camera coverage, LPR, alarms, and situational awareness for operators and responders (Verkada Command).
► Weapon Detection & Response — human-verified visible-gun detection on the camera network, with alerts that drive lockdowns, mass notification, and law enforcement response (ZeroEyes integrated with Verkada).
This is a hands-on, customer-facing technical leadership role. You will design it, defend it in front of the customer, oversee the installers who build it, and sign off when it is commissioned.
03 | Key Responsibilities
Customer Discovery & Assessment
► Lead site walks and security assessments with customer stakeholders; identify threats, vulnerabilities, coverage gaps, and operational constraints (bell schedules, event days, staffing, union and code requirements).
► Apply CPTED principles and layered-defense thinking to define the perimeter, controlled-entry points, and interior zones before selecting any product.
► Assess existing infrastructure — cameras, NVRs, door hardware, cabling, switching, PoE capacity, and internet circuits — and determine what can be reused, what must be replaced, and why (including NDAA Section 889 compliance).
Architecture & Design
► Produce complete design packages: camera placement and field-of-view plans, door and reader schedules, entry-screening lane layouts, device schedules / BOMs, network and VLAN designs, PoE budgets, and riser diagrams.
► Design Verkada deployments end to end: cameras, Access Control, Alarms, Intercom, Guest, Viewing Stations, LPR, and Command organization structure, roles, and permissions.
► Design Evolv Express entry screening: lane counts, throughput modeling for peak arrival and event surges, secondary-screening areas, staffing models, power and connectivity, and placement relative to vestibules and egress paths.
► Design ZeroEyes deployments: camera selection and placement for detection effectiveness, on-site appliance and network requirements, and the alert path from the ZeroEyes Operations Center into Verkada Command and the customer's response protocol.
► Engineer the integrated response workflow — detection to verification to lockdown to notification to responder video access — and document who sees what, and within how many seconds.
► Ensure designs respect life-safety and fire code (egress, locking hardware, NFPA 101 / local AHJ), ADA, and applicable state school-safety requirements.
Cyber & Network Security
► Define the security architecture for every deployment: network segmentation, firewall egress rules, SSO/SAML and SCIM integration, MFA, role-based access, audit logging, and video retention policies.
► Partner with customer IT and CISO teams to pass security reviews, and address CJIS, FERPA, HIPAA, and public-records considerations where they apply.
Delivery & Commissioning
► Serve as technical lead through installation: direct and quality-check low-voltage and integration subcontractors, resolve field issues, and keep work on schedule around occupied facilities.
► Run acceptance testing — coverage verification, access control and lockdown tests, screening throughput validation, and end-to-end weapon-alert drills with the customer and local law enforcement.
► Deliver as-built documentation, administrator training, and a clean handoff to the customer's operations team.
Growth
► Act as the technical voice in sales pursuits: discovery calls, demos, solution briefs, and technical volumes for RFPs, grant applications, and cooperative purchasing vehicles.
► Build MissionRT's reference architectures and design standards so every new deployment starts from a proven baseline.
04 | Required Qualifications
► Experience: 5+ years designing and deploying physical security systems — video, access control, and intrusion/alarms — in government, education, healthcare, or other critical environments.
► Hands-on install background: You have personally installed, configured, and commissioned systems in the field, not only designed them on paper.
► Customer-facing design: A track record of leading discovery, presenting designs to executive and technical stakeholders, and winning approval.
► Network fundamentals: Strong working knowledge of IP networking, VLANs, PoE budgeting, bandwidth planning, firewalls, and secure cloud connectivity for physical security devices.
► Documentation: Able to produce professional design packages — site plans, device schedules, network diagrams, and as-builts — without hand-holding.
► Codes & compliance: Working knowledge of life-safety/egress requirements for locking hardware, ADA, and NDAA Section 889.
► Travel & eligibility: Willing to travel to customer sites up to 50%; U.S. citizen; able to pass CJIS-level and agency background checks.
05 | Strongly Preferred
► Verkada design and installation experience — cameras, Access Control, Alarms, Intercom, and Command administration — ideally at a Verkada channel partner or integrator, with current Verkada partner training/certification.
► Deployment or integration experience with Evolv Express or other touchless weapons screening, and/or ZeroEyes or other AI weapon detection platforms.
► K-12, higher-ed, stadium/venue, municipal, or healthcare deployments involving peak-flow entry screening and lockdown workflows.
► Certifications such as ASIS PSP or CPP, BICSI RCDD, CCNA, CompTIA Security+, or equivalent.
► Experience writing technical sections of public-sector RFP responses and grant applications.
► Familiarity with real-time crime centers, PSAP/911 integration, and mass notification platforms.
