Senior Software Engineer
Job Description
Senior Software Engineer
Payments / Fintech | Remote (US)
Up to $225,000 base
About the role
Our client is an established payments technology company. They're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join their remote engineering team. This is a hands-on senior role for someone who writes production code every day and also thinks in systems: how services fit together, how they scale and how they fail.
You'll work across several languages. You'll contribute to core product components, many of them built in Scala, as well as services in Node.js/TypeScript and C#. The team is AI-forward, so AI and agentic tools will be a real part of how you design, build and ship software, not something you use now and then.
You don't need to have held an architect title. What matters is the architectural judgement that comes with seniority: shaping technical direction, making sound trade-offs and raising the bar for the engineers around you.
What you'll do
- Design, build and maintain enterprise-grade services that scale, hold up under load and have no single point of failure
- Contribute directly to the Scala components at the core of the products, as well as Node.js/TypeScript and C# services
- Bring architectural thinking to the team: shape system design, review technical approaches and help set engineering standards
- Use AI and agentic workflows to make engineering faster and better, and help the wider team do the same
- Work with product, QA and leadership to take features from idea to production quickly and reliably
- Mentor other engineers and help build a team where everyone takes ownership
What we're looking for
Must have:
- Senior-level software engineering experience, including designing and owning complex systems
- Hands-on commercial Scala experience. You don't need to be a specialist, but you need real production experience beyond coursework
- Strong experience with Node.js/TypeScript or C#; both is ideal
- A deep, practical understanding of AI-assisted and agentic development. You know how these tools work technically and use them to move faster, beyond simply having tried a coding assistant
- Experience building enterprise-class cloud software that scales and stays reliable, with backup systems built in
- A solid grounding in software architecture and distributed systems, whether or not your job title has said so
Nice to have:
- Payments or wider fintech experience
- AWS or another major cloud platform at scale
- Experience in a small, remote-first engineering team with broad ownership
Why this role • Fully remote, with no need to move to a major tech hub • A small, senior team where your work has a direct, visible impact on the product • An engineering culture that invests in AI-forward ways of working • Real payments infrastructure on a modern stack that uses several languages
