Job Description

About the Company

Turing is an AI infrastructure company that works with leading AI research organizations to accelerate model development through high-quality training data, evaluations, and engineering talent.

About the Role

Turing is seeking a Remote Software Engineer specializing in Python and/or TypeScript to support AI model development through data evaluation, rubric creation, and engineering infrastructure. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience working with preference data, strong technical judgment, and the ability to distinguish high-quality examples from those that need improvement.

In this role, you will help establish clear evaluation criteria, improve data quality, and develop reliable workflows that support AI research. You should be comfortable working in a fast-moving environment, communicating technical findings clearly, and turning complex requirements into practical solutions.

This is a fully remote, independent contractor opportunity with an expected duration of approximately three months and a start date as soon as possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, refine, and improve rubrics and evaluation criteria for preference data.
  • Review and label data against high quality standards, identifying subtle issues and inconsistencies.
  • Build and maintain pipelines and infrastructure that support data generation, collection, and evaluation workflows.
  • Analyze findings from data-related work and communicate results through clear reports, updates, and actionable recommendations.
  • Collaborate with researchers and engineers to translate qualitative judgments into consistent, scalable processes.
  • Support improvements to data quality and evaluation methods used in AI model development.
  • Apply strong technical judgment to assess examples, explain quality differences, and maintain consistent evaluation standards.
  • Deliver practical solutions efficiently while adapting to changing priorities and technical requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Python or TypeScript, with experience relevant to engineering workflows and code maintenance.
  • Hands-on experience with preference data collection, rubric creation, or both.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical work in concise, structured, and actionable terms.
  • Strong quality judgment and the ability to explain why an example or solution is effective, not simply identify whether it meets basic requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with researchers and engineers.
  • Comfort working in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards for quality and delivery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience navigating or contributing to large codebases, such as Visual Studio Code (VS Code), particularly for candidates working with TypeScript.
  • Experience building or maintaining data pipelines and infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with AI model training, preference data evaluation, or data quality workflows.
  • Ability to convert subjective evaluations into clear criteria that can be applied consistently at scale.

Salary & Benefits

Compensation is offered at a market rate. Candidates should provide a specific expected rate rather than a range to help determine mutual fit.

Additional engagement details include:

  • Work arrangement: Fully remote.
  • Contract type: Independent contractor.
  • Duration: Approximately three months, with an expected immediate start.
  • Availability: 40 hours per week is preferred, with at least six hours of overlap with Pacific Time. Candidates who cannot commit to 40 hours should provide their available weekly hours and preferred overlap window.
  • Project exposure: Opportunity to contribute to AI projects involving leading large language model (LLM) companies.

Medical insurance and paid leave benefits are not included in this contractor engagement.

Interview Process

The selection process consists of one interview lasting approximately 30 minutes, covering technical capabilities and cultural fit.
