About the Role

The Principal Software Engineer will lead the design, development, integration, and maintenance of software systems. The role includes defining technical specifications, designing Spring Boot architecture, managing MongoDB systems, developing REST APIs, and ensuring production reliability through monitoring, alerting, and integration testing.

The position offers significant technical ownership, a remote-friendly work environment, and responsibility for participating in an on-call rotation.

Key Responsibilities

• Investigate system outages and implement fixes to improve reliability and prevent recurring issues.
• Monitor system health and establish alerting for production environments.
• Translate business requirements into technical specifications and actionable development tasks.
• Design Spring Boot architecture, present and defend architectural decisions during reviews, and implement the resulting solutions.
• Write integration tests to identify regressions before software releases.
• Own and maintain MongoDB subsystems that support other company systems.
• Contribute to technical discussions and collaborate with team members to improve software quality and system performance.
• Participate in the production on-call rotation.

Required Qualifications

• Experience working at the principal engineer level in a full-time role.
• At least nine years of experience applying Adaptability in a technology setting.
• Strong judgment in designing and implementing REST APIs, including evaluating solutions when standard approaches are not suitable.
• Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing requirements.
• Strong prioritization and problem-solving skills, particularly when managing competing demands.

Salary and Benefits

• Salary range of $173,000–$260,000.

Work Arrangement and Location

The position is based in Sitka, Alaska, with a remote-first, flexible work environment.

The role includes an on-call rotation.
