Staff Software Enginer, Backend - Payments Platform

For our client, we are seeking a Staff Software Enginer, Backend - Payments Platform to join the team of a leader in the Finance & Insurance space.

This role will shape backend architecture for a global payments platform, with a strong emphasis on scale, resilience, and reliability. You will partner closely with product, engineering, and other cross-functional stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutions that support high-volume transactional traffic. The position calls for a hands-on technical leader who can improve shared systems, raise engineering standards, and guide the team through thoughtful design and execution.

Location: Remote - US based candidates only, no visa sponsorship available

Compensation: $218,025 – $256,500 annually

Responsibilities

• Own the technical strategy and architecture for the payments platform, defining a roadmap for global scaling.
• Build and evolve distributed systems for high-volume payment traffic, focusing on fault isolation and observability.
• Drive engineering quality through established coding standards and shared frameworks.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Lead initiatives for scaling and reliability, proactively addressing potential bottlenecks.
• Mentor team members through design reviews and architectural guidance.
  
  

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, particularly in payment systems or high-volume transactional platforms.
• Proven ability to architect and deliver fault-tolerant distributed systems at scale.
• Experience transforming fragmented services into coherent, reusable systems.
• Demonstrated ownership of production reliability and incident response.
• History of influencing technical direction across teams without direct authority.
• Familiarity with responsible use of generative AI to enhance workflow efficiency.
