Job Description

About Vida Health

Vida Health is a virtual healthcare provider offering personalized, evidence-based care for obesity and related conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, and depression. Its multidisciplinary care teams include physicians, registered dietitians, health coaches, and licensed therapists. Vida combines technology and clinical expertise to help individuals improve their overall health and well-being.

About the Role

Vida Health is seeking a Principal AI/ML Engineering Lead to help rebuild and scale its data platform while establishing the technical foundation for future AI and machine learning capabilities. This hands-on role spans software engineering, data infrastructure, cloud platforms, DevOps, security, and production AI/ML systems.

You will work closely with platform, security, IT, and DevOps teams to build reliable, secure infrastructure that supports advanced analytics and AI-driven products while protecting sensitive patient information. You will also help establish engineering standards and strengthen AI/ML capabilities across the organization.

This is a remote position for candidates authorized to work in the United States who reside in a state where Vida is registered to operate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of the data platform, including data ingestion, transformation, canonical data models, entity resolution, event infrastructure, configuration as code, APIs, and data-serving layers.
  • Improve platform reliability through CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, environment management, and observability across metrics, logs, traces, and service-level objectives.
  • Partner with Security and IT teams to implement data classification, access controls, secrets management, and key management aligned with HIPAA and HITRUST requirements.
  • Build the foundation for the AI/ML platform, including model serving, inference gateways, feature pipelines, training data pipelines, and model lifecycle management.
  • Develop capabilities for model registration, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring in production environments.
  • Integrate large language models (LLMs) with appropriate grounding, evaluation, and guardrails.
  • Ensure protected health information remains within controlled security boundaries, using in-VPC or local inference when required to prevent data exposure.
  • Collaborate with existing team leads to improve AI/ML knowledge across platform, security, and DevOps teams.
  • Establish reusable engineering patterns and practices that support secure, reliable, and scalable AI/ML development.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as needed to support platform development and business priorities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • 7–10+ years of experience building and scaling production-grade machine learning or AI systems.
  • Broad software engineering experience across backend development, infrastructure, and data systems.
  • Substantial hands-on experience deploying AI/ML systems in production, including MLOps, model serving, inference infrastructure, feature and data pipelines, and integration into real-world applications.
  • Strong cloud engineering experience, preferably with Google Cloud Platform services such as Vertex AI, BigQuery, Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL, and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE). Experience with equivalent AWS or Azure services is also welcome.
  • Experience with CI/CD, Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools, containers, Kubernetes, and production observability.
  • Strong data engineering skills, including SQL, data pipeline tools such as dbt, and data warehousing.
  • A security-focused approach to engineering and experience working with sensitive data in regulated environments.
  • Experience building LLM applications, including retrieval, evaluation, guardrails, and knowledge graphs.
  • Ability to work effectively in ambiguous environments, deliver practical solutions, and contribute across multiple technical areas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with entity resolution or master data management.
  • Experience in healthcare or another regulated data environment.
  • Familiarity with GraphQL or federated data-serving architectures.
  • Experience with privacy-enhancing technologies.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA or HITRUST requirements.

Salary & Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is $250,000–$275,000.
