Job Description

Clerk is seeking a Staff-level Data Scientist or Machine Learning Engineer to build production machine learning systems and turn data into useful products. This is a high-impact individual contributor role for an experienced builder who enjoys solving ambiguous problems, collaborating across engineering teams, and delivering work from initial exploration through production.

About The Company

Clerk is on a mission to solve the user identity layer once and for all. We are a globally distributed team building developer infrastructure for the next generation of software, including AI-powered applications. Clerk provides full-stack React components and hooks, such as useUser and useOrganization, that help developers implement user identity, organization management, and billing flows. We believe a component can be worth a thousand APIs, and we focus on making complex infrastructure easier to build and operate.

About The Role

You will join a deliberately small, senior data team and own machine learning and product-facing data initiatives. You will take greenfield projects from the first question through design, implementation, deployment, and iteration. Your work will span Clerk’s data and engineering environments, with an emphasis on building on the systems our teams already use rather than creating a separate, disconnected stack.

This role calls for someone who combines analytical judgment with practical engineering skills. You will help establish the foundations for production ML while identifying ways to turn Clerk’s data into capabilities that support internal teams and, over time, customers.

Qualifications

You have experience as a Staff-level Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, or in a comparable role, and have built machine learning systems from the ground up and operated them in production. You are comfortable moving between analysis, modeling, data infrastructure, and software implementation.

  • You have led large, ambiguous projects as an individual contributor and can make progress with substantial scope and autonomy.
  • You are comfortable working across data and engineering, including contributing to adjacent product or platform repositories and coordinating with the teams responsible for them.
  • You bring strong product judgment and can distinguish valuable problems from interesting but lower-impact work.
  • You favor an iterative approach, shipping useful work early and improving it based on feedback and results.
  • You have high standards for data quality, machine learning, and infrastructure, with the technical fluency to explain and apply sound practices.
  • You are located in the Americas within three hours of U.S. Mountain Time (MDT, UTC−06:00).
  • Experience with developer tools or infrastructure products is an advantage. Familiarity with GCP, BigQuery, dbt, Dagster, ClickHouse, PostHog, and Hex is helpful, or you can learn these tools quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Build Clerk’s machine learning infrastructure, including data pipelines, model training workflows, and model-serving capabilities that move solutions from experimentation into production.
  • Use Clerk’s existing engineering systems and workflows to deliver ML, avoiding unnecessary parallel infrastructure.
  • Develop internal data signals, including conversion and expansion scoring, lifetime value models, and feature telemetry, and identify opportunities to make relevant insights available to customers.
  • Help develop a semantic layer that enables customers to explore and access their data using natural language.
  • Integrate models and data signals into product and platform code in partnership with the teams that own those systems.
  • Lead cross-functional work, investigate trends, build dashboards, and speak with customers when needed to understand problems and deliver effective solutions.
  • Take ownership beyond formal project boundaries and prioritize outcomes that help Clerk and its customers succeed.

Benefits

Clerk offers competitive compensation that reflects the skills and experience you bring, along with stock options that provide an opportunity to share in the company’s growth. Benefits include health insurance, a home-office equipment allowance, and a flexible, unlimited vacation policy. Clerk recommends taking 25 vacation days per year, in addition to national holidays observed in your country of residence. You will also join a diverse, globally distributed team committed to building impactful products and tools for the modern web.

Equal Opportunity

Clerk is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and respectful workplace where people can contribute their skills and perspectives. We welcome candidates who are excited to build useful products and collaborate with teammates across backgrounds, locations, and experiences.
