Job Description
About The Company
Energy Innovation: Policy and Technology LLC is a technology-focused organization based in Ketchikan, Alaska. The company designs and develops tools that support businesses across the technology sector, with products and services intended to address practical needs and help teams work effectively. Its Civic Innovation Lab brings together ideas, technology, and collaboration to explore solutions for business and community challenges.
The Ketchikan team works at a steady, sustainable pace and values time for careful, focused development. Team members are encouraged to communicate openly, learn from one another, and take ownership of their work. This environment is suited to people who are curious, adaptable, and interested in improving early ideas through thoughtful implementation and documentation.
About The Role
Energy Innovation: Policy and Technology LLC is seeking a Junior Node.js Developer to contribute to the development and ongoing improvement of the Civic Innovation Lab’s technology platform. This is an opportunity for an early-career developer who is ready to build practical experience, learn from a mentor, and take responsibility for well-scoped work from initial discussion through implementation and review.
You will work with colleagues to understand business needs, help turn ideas into technical plans, and develop reliable software that supports users and internal teams. The role is collaborative and hands-on: you may contribute to prototypes, APIs, integrations, database improvements, and platform maintenance. Node.js is central to the position, while familiarity with Angular, Ruby on Rails, or infrastructure tools such as Ansible can help you work across the broader technology environment. The position offers an annual salary range of $68,000 to $99,000, depending on relevant experience and qualifications.
Qualifications
Applicants should bring a foundation in software development and a genuine interest in building their skills with Node.js. Approximately one year of relevant experience, which may include internships, academic projects, or other practical development work, is preferred. You should be comfortable learning unfamiliar systems and applying feedback to improve your work.
We are looking for clear written and verbal communication, sound analytical thinking, and the ability to collaborate with people who have different areas of expertise. Strong candidates can break larger problems into manageable tasks, document decisions, and contribute constructively when requirements are still developing. Familiarity with JavaScript, API development, databases, authentication concepts, version control, or software testing is helpful. Experience with Angular, Ruby on Rails, or Ansible is beneficial but not required.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with business stakeholders and developers to clarify requirements and translate feedback into technical specifications, estimates, and actionable tasks. Contribute to prototypes that help the team assess ideas, communicate trade-offs, and identify opportunities for improvement.
Develop, test, document, and maintain Node.js services and application features. Support integrations with other parts of the platform, including systems built with Angular or Ruby on Rails, and help investigate issues that arise across service boundaries. Assist with implementing secure authentication and authorization flows, following established standards and seeking review when needed.
Help tune database queries and schemas to support reliable performance as workloads grow. Participate in code reviews, testing, release preparation, and service support, with appropriate guidance from experienced colleagues. Keep technical documentation useful and current, and raise risks, questions, and potential improvements early.
Benefits
The role offers an annual salary of $68,000 to $99,000, commuter benefits, and a mentor matched to your professional interests and technology goals. You will have opportunities to develop practical skills, contribute to meaningful platform work, and learn in a team that protects time for focused development. Specific compensation and benefit details are subject to the company’s policies and the terms of employment.
Equal Opportunity
Energy Innovation: Policy and Technology LLC is committed to providing a respectful and inclusive workplace. Employment decisions are based on role-related qualifications, skills, and business needs. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to protected characteristics under applicable law. Candidates are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every preferred qualification.
