Job Description
We make precision machined parts that end up inside klystrons, gyrotrons and traveling-wave tubes, that go into science and defense programs across the country. Our machinists are excellent. Our scheduling isn't there yet. We're looking for a production planner who wants to take a busy shop with a good ERP and make it run on real data instead of memory.
The role
Own the production schedule and make ProShop the single source of truth for every job. You'll turn our ERP into the tool that tells us what runs next, when it ships and what it really cost. You'll report directly to the owner and work every day with our machinists, programming, quality and purchasing.
Why this role exists. We've had ProShop for about a year, but scheduling and labor tracking still live in people's heads. Jobs run late and lead times are guesses. This role fixes that, and you'll have ownership's backing to do it.
About us
Feral Productions is a precision CNC shop in Tracy, CA, in business since 1979. Our 20-person team runs 16 mills and lathes doing high-mix, low-volume work for manufacturers of vacuum electron devices (VEDs) and other science and defense customers.
What you'll do
- Build and own the master schedule: load every open job to a machine in ProShop and keep it current as priorities, rush orders and machine downtime shift
- Set quoted lead times from real machine capacity and backlog
- Track material, outside processing (plating, heat treat and similar) and inspection, and flag holdups before they make a job late
- Get machinists clocking actual hours by job and operation, and compare actuals to estimates so quotes become more accurate
- Run the weekly late-job review so every at-risk job has an owner and a recovery date
- Serve as the shop's ProShop administrator: maintain routings, work centers and scheduling settings, and train the team to use it
What success looks like
First 90 days
- Every open job scheduled to a machine in ProShop
- Labor hours clocked on all new work
- Weekly late-job report up and running
First year
- On-time delivery measured every week and trending up
- Quotes and lead times built from actual hours and real capacity
What we're looking for
Required
- 3+ years in production planning or scheduling at a CNC machine shop or job shop
- Hands-on experience with a manufacturing ERP, such as JobBOSS, E2, Epicor, Global Shop or ProShop
- Solid understanding of setups, cycle times and routings, and the ability to read blueprints
- Strong with data and Excel
- Organized and persistent, comfortable on the shop floor and holding people to a schedule
- Must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident or protected individual), as our work is subject to U.S. export control regulations
Nice to have
- ProShop experience (we'll train you if not)
- Hands-on time as a CNC machinist, setup person or programmer
- Experience rolling out an ERP or getting a shop floor to adopt one
- Experience in an ISO 9001 or AS9100 environment
Why you'll like it here
- You build the system, not just run someone else's, and the results show up on the floor within weeks
- Direct line to ownership, with no layers of approval
- A stable shop with a 45+ year history that's growing
- Interesting, demanding work for science and defense customers
Pay, schedule and benefits
- Pay: $80,000-$110,000 depending on experience
- Schedule: Monday through Thursday 6:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., on site in Tracy, CA
- Benefits: medical, 401(k), paid time off, paid holidays, tuition reimbursement
