Job Description
Jacksonville Tutoring Specialists (JTS) | Part-Time
Help students become confident, independent readers and spellers.Jacksonville Tutoring Specialists is seeking thoughtful, dependable individuals who want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students with dyslexia and other learning differences.
You do not need to be an experienced teacher or tutor to apply. We welcome candidates from a variety of backgrounds who enjoy working with children, are curious about how language works, have the right mindset, and are eager to learn. JTS provides guidance, instructional resources, and opportunities to develop your skills.
Our immediate hiring priority is recruiting in-person tutors in Jacksonville, particularly the Westside and Beaches, as well as the Northside, Southside, Fort Caroline, Mandarin, Orange Park, Fleming Island, and Nocatee. We also welcome qualified applicants outside Jacksonville for remote tutoring opportunities.
You will provide individualized reading and spelling instruction to students who need a different approach to learning. Depending on the student's needs, instruction may address:
- Phonemic awareness and phonics.
- Sound-to-letter and letter-to-sound relationships.
- Reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.
- Spelling patterns and conventions.
- Word structure, morphology, and etymology.
- Vocabulary and understanding how written language works.
Our approach combines explicit instruction with guided discovery. Tutors teach students the patterns and structure of language while helping them notice connections, ask questions, and develop their own understanding.
Reading and spelling are the primary focus. Tutors who demonstrate an aptitude for written expression may have opportunities to receive additional training in writing instruction.
We are looking for people who:
- Communicate clearly. You can explain concepts in spoken English that students can readily understand, speak at an appropriate pace, and rephrase explanations when needed.
- Enjoy working with children. You bring patience, warmth, enthusiasm, and the ability to engage students.
- Are curious about language. You enjoy exploring how sounds, spelling, word structure, and meaning work together.
- Think independently. You recognize when something isn't working and are willing to adjust your approach.
- Value guided discovery. You enjoy helping students notice patterns, make connections, and develop their understanding.
- Are dependable and consistent. You understand that students benefit from predictable schedules and ongoing relationships with their tutors.
- Want to keep learning. You are receptive to feedback, willing to develop new skills, and interested in growing professionally.
Becoming familiar with JTS's instructional approach requires initiative and a commitment to learning. Our development process includes independent study of assigned reading materials and instructional videos, followed by in-person demonstrations, practice, and opportunities to develop instructional skills.
We are looking for self-directed learners who are willing to prepare, ask questions, apply what they learn, and continue developing their expertise.
JTS uses a five-level instructional framework: Novice, Developing, Competent, Proficient, and Expert. The first milestone is advancing from Novice to Developing, which recognizes the ability to accurately demonstrate our foundational instructional skills.
- Experience working with children is helpful; formal teaching or tutoring experience is not required.
- A bachelor's degree is a plus.
- Orton-Gillingham training or experience with Structured Literacy is valuable but not required.
- Clear, understandable spoken English is essential.
- We generally look for availability of six or more hours per week, including after-school hours, usually between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. We may consider fewer hours for experienced teachers with more limited availability.
- We are particularly interested in individuals who want to build a lasting professional relationship with JTS.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check is required.
- Remote tutors must have reliable high-speed internet and a dependable, up-to-date computer.
Initial tutoring rates generally range from $25–$30 per 50-minute session, depending on experience and demonstrated skills.
As tutors gain experience, strengthen their instructional skills, and advance through JTS's five instructional levels, compensation can increase. Experienced tutors may earn up to $50 per 50-minute session, depending on instructional level, demonstrated expertise, and the assignment, including the number of students served.
Progression reflects a combination of experience, practice, consistency, and demonstrated competency. We recognize that individuals develop at different rates, and exceptional progress may warrant an earlier compensation review.
We are currently expanding our in-person tutor team throughout Jacksonville and surrounding communities, with particular interest in the Westside and Beaches.
Tutors generally meet students at the tutor's location or work with them remotely online. Opportunities may also be available at schools and homeschool co-ops.
Qualified applicants outside Jacksonville are also welcome to inquire about remote opportunities.
If you enjoy helping children overcome learning challenges, are curious about language, and want to develop your skills as a literacy tutor, we'd like to hear from you.
Please send your résumé and tell us a little about yourself, your experience working with children, and why you are interested in this kind of work.
