These teams build and maintain reliable data systems, establish strong data governance practices, and develop foundational datasets that support business insights, product innovation, and AI initiatives.

Opportunities are available within the Data Stewardship team and the Users and Contextualization Data & AI team. The roles focus on building scalable data pipelines, improving data quality, designing effective data models, and supporting data-driven products and experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect, develop, and productionize batch and real-time data systems to support product and business requirements.
  • Build and maintain robust data pipelines and monitoring systems to ensure data quality, performance, and reliability.
  • Design and optimize data models for efficient storage and retrieval.
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, data scientists, and business partners to understand data requirements and develop scalable solutions.
  • Tune, productionize, and optimize data systems and machine learning models.
  • Work with backend, client, data science, and machine learning engineering teams to support seamless data integration.
  • Contribute to long-term data strategies and roadmaps and influence technical direction.
  • Support data quality initiatives by identifying critical data, tracking data provenance, and measuring the effectiveness of internal data products.
  • Help establish and maintain data governance and compliance practices in collaboration with information security, privacy, and other stakeholders.
  • Support data catalog and offline data interfaces that help internal users identify and access reliable datasets.
  • Mentor and coach team members and promote data engineering best practices.
  • Evaluate new technologies and methodologies to improve data processes and solutions.

Required Qualifications

  • 9+ years of relevant industry experience with a bachelor's and/or master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Alternatively, 6+ years of relevant experience with a PhD.
  • Extensive experience designing, building, and operating distributed data platforms such as Spark, Kafka, Flink, and HBase.
  • Experience handling data at the petabyte scale.
  • Strong knowledge of Java, Scala, or Python.
  • Proficiency in SQL and data processing technologies.
  • Experience designing, building, and optimizing batch and real-time data pipelines.
  • Strong understanding of data quality, governance, and system reliability.
  • Expertise in data modeling and data warehousing.
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL and columnar databases such as Redshift and BigQuery.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts and influence stakeholders.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and guide engineering practices.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and support data-driven decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with machine learning engineers to integrate ML models into data systems and products.
  • Experience optimizing data systems and machine learning models for production environments.

Work Arrangement & Location

  • Remote-eligible position within the United States.
  • Candidates must reside in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity and that is not on the company's excluded-state list.
