What it is
The Z83 is the application for employment form for South Africa's public service. It helps a government department choose a person for an advertised post. (dpsa.gov.za)
Use the new Z83, in force since 01 January 2021. Departments turn away applications made on the old form. (dpsa.gov.za)
Who asks for it
Anyone applying for an advertised post in a government department fills it in. The weekly Public Service Vacancy Circular asks for applications on form Z83, sent to the department that has the vacancy. (dpsa.gov.za)
How to get it
Fill in every section completely, accurately and legibly. Your personal details must match your ID or passport. (dpsa.gov.za)
Write the post's name and reference number, as in the advert, on your Z83. (dpsa.gov.za)
Sections A, B, C and D must be filled in full. For sections E, F and G, departments accept "refer to CV" or "see attached" because space is short, but the question in Part F about conditions that prevent re-appointment must still be answered. (dpsa.gov.za)
Use a separate application form for each post you apply for. (dpsa.gov.za)
Send the Z83 with a detailed CV. Many adverts do not want copies of qualifications at this stage: certified copies are asked for from shortlisted candidates, on or before the interview day. (dpsa.gov.za)
Departments must accept certified copies that are up to 6 months old, unless the advert allows longer. (dpsa.gov.za)
Sign and initial the form. An unsigned form may be disqualified during selection. (dpsa.gov.za)
Where to go
You can get the form from any public service department or download it online. The DPSA publishes it on its website. (dpsa.gov.za)
How an employer checks it
Departments check what you declare. Successful candidates go through personnel suitability checks, such as criminal record, citizenship and qualification checks. (dpsa.gov.za)
Be careful
False information on the form disqualifies the application, or can lead to disciplinary action if you are appointed. (dpsa.gov.za)
Applications on the old Z83 form are disqualified, and late applications are not considered. (dpsa.gov.za)
Never pay for a government job. Government departments warn that paying for a job is unlawful and is not needed to get one. (sanews.gov.za)
The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure warns that government does not ask for payment for jobs. Check a vacancy on the official website, whose address ends in gov.za. (sanews.gov.za)
Who to call
Questions about a post go to the department that advertised it, not to the DPSA. (dpsa.gov.za)
Where this comes from
Every fact above was read on an official page, linked beside it; we last checked them on October 27, 2026. Fees and times change: the official site has the final word. We are not the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) and cannot apply for you, see your application or speed it up.
