What it is
A Tax Compliance Certificate, also called a Tax Clearance Certificate, is KRA's proof that you have filed your returns and paid your taxes. (kra.go.ke)
Who asks for it
KRA says a job needs one once you are offered the job, not when you apply. (kra.go.ke)
Public bodies in Kenya ask for clearances under Chapter Six of the Constitution. The National Police Service Commission's January 2025 advert, for example, asked shortlisted candidates for manager posts and above for clearance certificates from KRA, HELB, EACC, CRB and DCI. (npsc.go.ke)
How to get it
Apply on iTax or on the KRA M-Service App. (kra.go.ke)
You must have filed your returns and paid your taxes on time, and cleared any tax debt or have an approved payment plan. (kra.go.ke)
How long it takes
With no tax owing, the certificate goes to your email at once. With tax owing, the application is rejected and KRA tells you what to put right before you apply again. (kra.go.ke)
How long it lasts
It is valid for twelve months. KRA asks you to apply for the next one 7 days before it runs out. (kra.go.ke)
How an employer checks it
Anyone can check a certificate with the KRA M-Service App or the TCC checker on the iTax portal. (kra.go.ke)
Who to call
KRA's contact centre: 020 4 999 999 or 0711 099 999. (kra.go.ke)
Where this comes from
Every fact above was read on an official page, linked beside it; we last checked them on October 26, 2026. Fees and times change: the official site has the final word. We are not the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and cannot apply for you, see your application or speed it up.
