What it is

An NBI clearance is a certificate from the National Bureau of Investigation. To issue it, the NBI checks your records, including any derogatory record. (clearance.nbi.gov.ph)

Who asks for it

Government jobs ask for it. The Civil Service Commission's 2025 rules require a valid NBI clearance for a first appointment to a government post and for reemployment. (csc.gov.ph)

How to get it

Register on the official portal, clearance.nbi.gov.ph, with an active mobile number and email address. You will get a one-time password to confirm your account. (nbi.gov.ph)

Fill in your profile so the spelling matches your IDs, then pick an NBI branch, a date and a time slot, and pay. Keep the reference number the system gives you. (nbi.gov.ph)

At the branch, bring your reference number and two original government-issued IDs that have not expired, such as a passport, driver's license, national ID, UMID, postal ID or PSA birth certificate. (nbi.gov.ph)

At the branch your photo, fingerprints and signature are taken, and you check your details on a screen before printing. (nbi.gov.ph)

If you had an NBI clearance issued after 2014 and your details have not changed, you can renew online and have it delivered by courier. (nbi.gov.ph)

You can also renew it in the eGovPH app, if you are eligible. (nbi.gov.ph)

Where to go

Apply and pay online first, then go to the NBI clearance office you chose. The NBI's office locator shows the offices on a map. (nbi.gov.ph)

From abroad, get NBI Form No. 5 from a Philippine embassy or consular office, have your fingerprints taken there or at a police station, and send it by mail or through a representative. (nbi.gov.ph)

What it costs

The basic fee is ₱130, plus a small e-payment service charge. You can pay with GCash, Maya, 7-Eleven, Bayad Center or online banking. (nbi.gov.ph)

By mail from abroad, send the ₱130 clearance fee plus ₱70 for mailing, in Philippine pesos or the same amount in US dollars. (nbi.gov.ph)

First-time jobseekers get it free under RA 11261. Use the First-Time Job Seekers Portal and bring your original barangay certificate saying you are a first-time jobseeker, and your signed Oath of Undertaking. (nbi.gov.ph)

How long it takes

With no HIT, the clearance is printed and handed to you within minutes. (nbi.gov.ph)

A HIT means your name is the same as or close to someone with a pending case or record. It is common. You are asked to come back, usually after 5 to 10 working days, while your name is checked, and you pay nothing more. (nbi.gov.ph)

How an employer checks it

The official portal has an online verification where a clearance's authenticity and validity can be checked. (clearance.nbi.gov.ph)

Be careful

Fake NBI clearances are sold. In 2021 the NBI arrested sellers on Recto Avenue, Manila, who charged Php2,500 for one. Apply only on clearance.nbi.gov.ph or at an NBI office. (nbi.gov.ph)

Who to call

Clearance questions: landline (02) 8524-1277 or mobile 0939 150 2880. The NBI Clearance Center is at the NBI Clearance Building, United Nations Avenue, Ermita, Manila. (nbi.gov.ph)
