The flat 22%

IRS Publication 15 (2026) treats bonuses as supplemental wages. When a bonus is paid on its own, an employer may withhold federal income tax at a flat 22%, or 37% on the part of a year's supplemental wages over $1 million. A $3,000 bonus has $660 withheld that way.

Social Security and Medicare

A bonus also has 6.2% taken out for Social Security, up to the year's wage base of $184,500, and 1.45% for Medicare, plus 0.9% on wages past $200,000 in the year. The calculator counts your salary and bonus against both limits.

Withheld is not owed

What is withheld is a payment toward your tax, not the tax itself. Your tax return settles what you owe for the year, so part of it may come back, or you may owe more.

State taxes

Most states tax a bonus too, and each has its own rules. The figure left here is before any state or local tax.
