Time and a half

Time and a half is your hourly pay times 1.5. At $20 an hour it is $30 an hour, so 10 hours of overtime pay $300, and a week of 40 regular hours and 10 overtime pays $1,100.

The federal rule

The U.S. Department of Labor says that, unless exempt, employees covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act must receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek at a rate not less than time and one-half their regular rates of pay. A workweek is a fixed and regularly recurring period of 168 hours, seven consecutive 24-hour periods.

Your state may ask for more

Some states have their own overtime rules on top of the federal one. Your state's labor department has them; your employer's pay policy says when double time applies.

Taxes on overtime

Overtime is taxed and withheld from like the rest of your pay. IRS Publication 15 (2026) says that for tax years 2025 through 2028 you may deduct up to $12,500 ($25,000 if married filing jointly) of qualified overtime on your tax return: the part above your rate, such as the "half" of time and a half. The calculator shows that part.
