Severance Pay Calculator: What You Could Get
Type your pay, your years with the employer and the weeks of pay they give for each year. See your severance before taxes.
How it is worked out
Many employers count severance in weeks of pay for each year worked. Two weeks for each of 5 years is 10 weeks: at $60,000 a year, $11,538.46.
Not required by federal law
The U.S. Department of Labor says there is no requirement in the Fair Labor Standards Act for severance pay. It comes from your employer's policy, your contract, or what you agree when you leave. Read the offer before you sign it.
Unused paid time off
Whether unused vacation is paid out when you leave depends on your state and your employer. Type your hours if yours is.
Taxes and unemployment
IRS Publication 15 (2026) lists severance pay among supplemental wages, so it is taxed like a bonus. Severance can also change when unemployment benefits start in some states: see your state's page on unemployment.
