How it builds up

Many employers do not give the whole year's time off at once. It builds up a little each paycheck, or each hour worked. 80 hours a year, paid every two weeks, is 3.08 hours a paycheck.

Per hour worked

Some employers count time off per hour worked, and so do several state and city sick leave laws: 1 hour for every 30 hours worked is one such rule. Type your hours a week to see your own rate.

Your employer's rules decide

Caps, what carries over to next year, waiting periods, and whether unused time is paid when you leave all differ by employer and by state. Your handbook or HR has the rules; this does the arithmetic.
