How it is worked out
Your pay for the year, less what is taken out before tax and the standard deduction, is taxed by the federal brackets for your filing status. Social Security and Medicare are taken from your whole pay. Your state's income tax is worked out from its own rates, deduction and exemption. A paycheck is the year divided by your paychecks.
An estimate, not your pay stub
Your employer withholds by the W-4 you filled in, so your paychecks can differ from this; your tax return settles the year. This leaves out tax credits (such as for children), other income, itemized deductions, and city or county income taxes.
Married filing jointly
The married figures count your pay as the household's only income. With two incomes, the tax on the household is higher than shown here for one.
Taken out before tax
Money put into a 401(k) and health insurance through work are usually taken out before income tax, so they lower it. Here Social Security and Medicare are still worked out on your whole pay, as they are for a 401(k).
